2 ( f ) shows some distinct regions in the polished surface of a BTOl pellet sintered at 1340°C. The EDS results confirmed the composition of these regions was also HBT. Since the HBT phase already formed at 1340°C, the reason why there was no needle-like crystal on the assintered surface can be attributed to two factors. First, at high sintering temperature, more eutectic melt was formed than at lower sintering temperatures. Second, the shrinkage and the porosity of the samples were different during the densification.

Most grains were round with an effective diameter of -200 nm, however a few grains were columnar. The round morphologies correspond to grains whose principle axis might be along the c-axis. As can be seen in Figure 2 (b), the columnar grains stood upright on the platinized silicon substrate; however, surface grains could also be seen growing from the substrate. 1 M, neither BNT nor BIT films of 65 nm thickness formed from a single layer. 5 M was required to get the film to consist of a single layer of approximately this thickness.
